Notes for Gosper Monts:

Gosper Monts, the son of Johan Caspar Manz and Anna Maria Werner, was probably born about 1755. In the year 1817 he was dead. Gosper Monts married Anna Mary Minick who was born about 1768 and died after 1850, daughter of George Bartholomew Minick and Mary Magdalena Summer. The family of Gosper Monts lived near present day Little Mountain, SC. Gosper Monts owned the bounty grants of George Henry and Catherine Wertz. John William (Jockey) Monts, grandson of Gosper Monts, lived on the George Henry Wertz tract. The Catherine Wertz grant contained the home place of John Monts and his family cemetery.

There is much evidence that Gosper Monts was orphaned at an early age and raised by the Wertz family. In a deed of 1798, John Miller gave the 50 acre bounty grant of Catherine Wertz to his godchild, John Montz, oldest son of his stepson, Gosper Montz (Newberry Deeds P-2, p. 438). This land had been sold by indenture of 1765 to Miller by George Henry Wertz (Rosalyn Sease Indenture Collection, Caroliniana Library). John Miller, in the above deed, was the second husband of Anna Barbara, widow of Jerg Heinrich Wertz. (In 1778, Barbara Miller transferred a tract of land on Camping Cr. to her son, George Henry Werts, Newberry Deeds O, p. 51). The Wertz family, like the Monts, migrated from Holzelfingen to SC in 1752. Since the Werts and Manz families were not closely related, it is thought likely that Jerg Heinrich and Anna Barbara Wertz were the Godparents of Gosper Monts. After the death of the parents of Gosper Monts he was raised by the Wertzes. Following the death of Gosper’s step-father Wertz, his step-mother remarried Johannes Müller and who was the second step-father of Gosper Monts.

The family of Gosper Monts and Anna Mary Minnick was described by Sarah Ann Catherine Feagle Monts, widow of George Michael Monts (from notes made by Rosalyn Summer Sease). Gosper Monts, according to Mrs. Monts, had no brothers in America and had the following children: Eve Catherine (married Adam Shealy), Polly (married Henry Smith), John, Adam (moved to Mississippi), Jasper (moved to Alabama), and William.

64. Jacob Lang He married 65. Elizabeth.

65. Elizabeth

Notes for Jacob Lang:

Came as a single man to SC aboard the "Brittania" in 1766 and obtained a 100 acre bounty grant near Prosperity. He obtained an additional 200 acre Colonial Grant on Camping Creek. In 1800, Jacob Long, with wife Elizabeth, made title to these grants to their children (Newberry Deeds E39). Land near Prosperity was deeded to son Thomas Long. Land on Camping Creek was deeded to grandsons, children of the deceased son Bartholomew.

In these deeds Jacob Long signs his name as John Jacob Long, with wife Elizabeth. The deed for the land on Camping Creek stated that John Jacob Long and wife lived on that tract.

Elizabeth, the widow of Jacob Long, made will in 1815 leaving items to daughter, Rosannah Barbara Koon, and the balance of her estate to daughter, Susannah, wife of John Michael Cromer. During Elizabeth Long's sickness, she lived with her daughter and soninlaw. In the will of John Michael Cromer, Matthias Hair is appointed executor of the estate and mentioned as being an uncle of Cromer's wife, Susan. On the basis of these records the wife of John Jacob Long is believed to have been Elizabeth Hair, daughter of Peter Hair, Sr.

"Long A Genealogical Record of the John Jacob Long Family beginning with his landing in America about 1750" , compiled by Eugene W. Long and published 15 June 1970 shows three sons of John Jacob Long (immigrant): Thomas, Bartholomew and Adam Long. This Adam is listed in our bio as John Adam Long born 4 June 1798 died 27 October 1852, a son of Thomas Long.

Children of Jacob Lang and Elizabeth are:

32 i. Thomas Long, married Mary Magdalena Minick.

ii. Jacob Bartholomew Long, died 13 Sep 1800.

73. Anna Catharina Werner She was the daughter of 146. Christian Werner.

Notes for Johan Caspar Manz:

Johan Caspar Manz was born 3 March 1723 in Kleinengstingen and married in November 1751 (in Holzelfingen), Anna Catharina Werner, daughter of Christian Werner of Holzelfingen. A daughter, Ursula, was born 27 August 1750 in Germany, before they married. They migrated to SC in 1752, coming on the Caledonia. A bounty grant of 150 acres to Gasper Mantz was located on Eighteen Mile Cr., south side of Saluda River in Lexington County. (Colonial Grants 5:244). A Memorial for John Barnet See records that on 13 July 1759 Gasper Mantz sold his bounty grant to See (Memorials 7:257). Gasper Mans is found in the list of men who were on duty in Col. Chevillette's Battalion at the Congarees Store from 1759 to 1760 (M. J. Clark, Colonial Soldiers of the South, 1732-1774, pp. 907/908).

URSULA MANZ

Ursula Manz, the daughter of Johann Caspar Manz, was born 27 August 1750. She obtained a 100 acre survey in 1772 just south of Little Mountain, SC. Later plats in the area show that her land was later owned by Henry Amick. It is possible that Ursula Manz was the wife of Johann Heinrich Emig (Amick), born 7 March 1746, son of Johann Conradt Emig and Barbara Herion. The Amicks came to SC in 1752 on the Upton.

Notes for George Bartholomew Minick:

GEORGE BARTHOLOMEW MINICK

George Bartholomew Minick is said to have married Mary Magdalene Summer, born about 1748, daughter of Hans Adam Summer and wife Anna Maria Yost. In 1794, Bartholomew Meenick and son, Johan Mennich signed the petition for incorporation of St. John's Lutheran Church. In 1804, Bartholomew Minick and son, John Minick, Sr., bought a 300 acre tract of land from George Adam Summer (Newberry Deeds T-2, p. 196). In 1808, George Bartholomew Minick gave to son, John, 150 acres of land that he had inherited from his father's land grant of 250 acres and his interest in half of the tract he had bought from George Adam Summer (SC Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. 11, p. 10, 1983). In the latter deed he calls his son William Minick.

In 1811, John Minick, Sr. gave a 100 acre part of his land to his son, John Minick, Jr. (Newberry Deeds K-52). In 1816, John Minick, Jr. sold the tract to John Hipp (Newberry Deeds O-279). In both of these deeds the lands of George Bartholomew Minick is shown as being owned by Bartholomew William Minick.

On 1 Nov 1816 "the heirs at law of William Minick, late of Lexington Dist., decd.," exposed for sale at public auction land contained in two adjacent lots. One of these lots was sold by the heirs at public auction 15 March 1817 to George Long (Newberry Deeds T-2, p. 199). From this deed the names of the children of George Bartholomew (alias William) Minick are known.

96. Johann Bernhard Loewenstein

Notes for Johann Bernhard Loewenstein:

John Livingston Family

Jan Barned and Hans Martin Leristeyn left Dühren, Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1727 (W. Hacker "Auswandererung vom Unteren Neckar"). They arrived in Philadelphia in that year on the William and Sarah with records indicating that Johann Bernard Loewenstein was 22 years old and Hans Martin Loewenstein was 24 years old.

Johann Bernard and Hans Martin Loewenstein at first settled in Lancaster County, PA, where the families were members of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church. The Loewensteins then moved to Frederick County, MD.

About 1750, Bernard Loewenstein moved to the Dutch Fork of SC. His petition for land was heard at the meeting of 5 March 1749/50 of the SC Provincial Council. He was granted a 350 acre tract on Cannons Creek near Prosperity, SC. The family went by the name Livingston after moving to SC.

Barnard Livingston had three sons: John, Martin, and Michael who were active Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. The "Ordinance to prevent Persons" (General Assembly), signed 8 November 1779 by Governor Rutledge, placed a death warrant on John and Martin Livingston. Martin Livingston was killed on 24 April 1781, presumably at Camden, SC (M. J. Clark, "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War, Vol. 1"). This was the day before the Battle of Hobkirk Hill, near Camden, SC.

The Livingston family has been described by B. O. Prince in "Let's Meet the Livingstons" (1967).

Notes for Peter Hair:

The family of Peter Heer arrived in S.C. in 1749 on the Ship Griffin, Capt. Arthur. His petition was heard 24 November 1749 by the Colonial S.C. Government (Council Journal 17:715) and he was awarded a 200 acre bounty grant on Cannons Creek On 1 December 1749 a letter was read before the provincial council from Peter Herr on behalf of himself and his fellow shipmates.

The letter stated that they came to America on the encouragement of John Jacob Ramensperger and were ..."met with nothing but disappointments, crosses, and misfortunes." Further, since arrival, Peter Heer's wife had died.

Peter Heer married 2) Anna Maria Herman. A memorial of 1766 for 50 acres to Peter Heer

(Memorials 9:43) describes land granted in 1754 to Anna Maria Herman. This record notes that Peter Haire married Anna Maria Herman and that she came on the Ship Griffin and had been indentured to Mrs. Sarah Lloyd for 3 yrs.

Additional grants to Peter Hare include a 1772 tract of 200 acres on Camping Creek. Peter Heer made will 24 August 1772 naming wife, Mary, and children. He left land on Camping Creek to sons, John and Matthias Hair. The 1749 bounty tract was divided between his son, Peter, Jr. and wife who was given a life estate in the the half then to son of her choice. When Matthias Hare sold land in 1798 on Camping Creek the deed indicates that land was inherited on 25 September 1774 by Father's LWT (Newberry Deeds D-166). This record indicates that Peter Heer, Sr. had died in 1774; the will was not recorded until 23 August 1791, after the death of Peter Heer's second wife.

Anna Maria Herman Heer remarried John Bushard and made will 13 November 1790, proven 27 July 1791, naming her children.
